Shaftesbury SchoolShaftesbury School is a modern school, which is now enjoying the results of a £9m building and refurbishment programme. The old Grammar School building now houses our Business, Enterprise and ICT Centre, and the main building has a light, airy feel, with spacious art rooms, D&T rooms and a state-of-the-art catering suite.

Our aim is to empower every individual who participates in our community to realise his/her aspirations. At the heart of our school are the values of our Christian Foundation, the ideals of the Olympic movement and the spirit of internationalism.

Around 80 of our students are boarders, housed in our boarding residence at Barton Hill. These students are representatives of many different countries, including Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Nepal, India, Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, Zambia, Germany, China, the Caribbean, Nigeria, the Ukraine and Canada giving our school a truly international feel.

Since our relaunch in 2003 we have operated a ‘vertical tutoring’ system. On entry to the school students are assigned to one of four houses - Thompson, Redgrave, Owens and Sanderson (each one inspired by sporting heroes). Within those houses, students are in tutor groups comprising students from Years 7 through to 11. The system has proved to be very successful, with older students acting as mentors to younger students, promoting good relationships among students of all ages, and a sense of identity and belonging.
