Barton Hill House
An international experience, promoting academic success in an English rural setting.
State maintained boarding – still one of England’s best kept secrets!
Shaftesbury School is a modern 11 – 18 school, which is now enjoying the results of a £9m building and refurbishment programme. At the heart of our school are the values of our Christian Foundation, the ideals of the Olympic movement and the spirit of internationalism. Shaftesbury School is an internationally outward-looking community promoting harmony, participation, friendly competition and opportunities for recognition and celebration.
Barton Hill House is the boarding facility for Shaftesbury School, a boarding tradition which has continued for three centuries. News finally arrived in early October of Shaftesbury School’s submission to the Government for funds to extend and refurbish the boarding complex. The school has been awarded £3million.
The key areas of development will be the construction of a new, purpose built block offering accommodation for 24 sixth form students in single study rooms plus staff accommodation. There will also be much needed refurbishment and upgrading of the current kitchen and dining facilities plus an extension to the student social area.

Shaftesbury is one of only 34 State Boarding Schools in England. It provides high quality boarding at the lowest possible cost. You pay only the cost of boarding as the education at a state school is free. This is only a fraction of the cost of boarding at an independent school. Admission to State Boarding Schools is limited to students who are nationals of the UK and are eligible to hold a full UK passport, or those who are nationals of other European Union countries or those who have the right of residence in the UK.
The OFSTED Report (February 2008) considered the effectiveness of boarding provision to be “good” and, reported that boarders “speak positively about the supportive ‘family’ atmosphere in the boarding house, which, as one boarder said, creates a ‘home from home.’”
Fees £7500 per year.
Personal Support
Students are supported in a variety of ways to enable them to settle in to the routines of both school and boarding. Students are allocated a buddy on arrival to ease the transition into boarding life.
In addition, every student has a staff mentor with whom they have regular meetings. Mentors undertake to reassure students on pastoral and academic issues. They liaise closely with senior members of staff who are the first point of contact with parents or guardians. Senior staff are always available to discuss student issues.
We are committed to excellent communication with parents and guardians with regular contact available via telephone and e-mail, which is complemented by a termly newsletter.
The student body is noted for its supportive nature and commonly exceeds the high expectations of standards, behaviour and values which are promoted. Many boarders establish friendships, some of which become lifelong.
Homework
Homework is supervised to monitor progress and ensure students have all the help they need both in the House and at school. Students for whom English is their second language are offered support at school and have the opportunity to receive one-to-one tuition after school. (Additional fees are charged for this service).
Extra-Curricular
Boarders are offered an extra-curricular programme. The activities are supervised by house staff and include swimming, football, basketball, and creative skills. The House takes advantage of the excellent sporting facilities at Shaftesbury School.
Boarders are also encouraged to join in activities outside the House and become members of local sports clubs. In addition, students may take private lessons in music, dance and riding, which the House will arrange on request.
Accommodation
Students are accommodated in 2, 3 or 4 bedded rooms. Most rooms have en suite bathrooms with some sixth form boys being accommodated in single study bedrooms.
