North Dorset Schools Climbing Championship

North Dorset Schools Climbing ChampionshipShaftesbury School played host to the first ever North Dorset schools rock climbing competition on Monday 7th of December. Teams assembled from Shaftesbury, Blandford and Gillingham for the event which lasted 2 hours and involved competitiors attempting 2 technical roped climbs, 1 speed climb and 4 boulder problems, giving them a possible total score of 70 points.

There were 4 divisions Junior Boys / Junior Girls / Senior Boys / Senior Girls with 4 climbers in each category.

The Shaftesbury team of climbers were without star Hariett Turner but still looked strong on the night, they were:

Junior Boys - J Spencer / J Ellis / M Elsey / B Mould
Junior Girls - Z Charlick / M Keenagh / G Harvey (H Turner - injured)

Senior Boys - K Dhrev / F Gordon / C Mould / J Eastmond
Senior Girls - I Stanton / C Gordon / M Barnett / S Boyle

It was a great event and parents and competitors alike commented on the friendly but competitive vibe on the night. Special mentions go to Keiha Dhrev and Ivy Stanton for winning their categories. Ivy climbed well throughout the event and defeated an array of talented climbers. Keiha also notched up a near faultless performance with 68 out of a possible 70 pts scored (must be that new home climbing wall he has in his garage now!)

Looking forward to next year's event

Good luck for a successful season.

Manager of the Year

As well as the competitions for the pupils at Shaftesbury, there is another competition hotting up this term. That of the Manager of the Year league which the Shaftesbury PE Staff (and other kind volunteer coaches) compete for glory against one another. A complicated point scoring system sees staff earn points for taking fixtures, with different amounts of points awarded for defeats, draws and victories and more points still for tournaments rather than single fixtures. The table currently stands as follows:

12/3/09 Points Played
Parkinson 106 26
More 90 24
Waters 56 15
George 47 13
Rogers 44 11
Haslam 39 9
Brooker 23 6
Dunn 22 5
Cooper 22 5
Hollands-Smith 19 5
Turner 15 3

NB The fact that Mr Parkinson updates the table and has opened up such a healthy lead could have led to cries of foul play if it weren’t for his well known sportsmanship and all round incorruptibility.

ASPIRE ACADEMY 'Gifted & Talented' Rock Climbing Day - Portland, Dorset

Rock Climbing DayOn Saturday 7th of March, 14 students from Shaftesbury School braved the cold for a days rock climbing on Portland Bill, Dorset. The day was set up as a new Aspire Academy, funded by the Foundation Governors to encourage opportunities for G&T students in PE & Sport. Out of the 14 students, most were on the G&T list with a few aspiring up and coming younger climbers in attendance.

The idea was to film their performances throughout the day and make a short film that they could take away and keep for analysis of movement studies and so they can show their friends and family. Dan Knight, one of the UK's strongest climbers came along for the day to coach and encourage the young stone monkeys. Dan was very complimentary about the whole group saying 'the group have huge potential and are a lovely bunch'

Rock Climbing DayThe morning session involved bouldering only (climbing without ropes) on a boulder field littered with rocks. This was great for coaching as students weren't so high off the ground. The afternoon session involved ropes and even more coaching on technique. It was a great day, the group did very well and were so tired they slept most of the way back on the minibus!

Year 9 Area Athletics

Shaftesbury sent a strong team of Year 9 Boys and Girls to the Area Athletics at Bryanston School on Thursday 12th June. Competitors performed well and there was a real team ethos throughout. Standouts were Sophie Burton who beat 14 girls to win the Long Jump and ran the most impressive 100m leg of the 4x100m girls relay where the team came 3rd. On the boys side, Taylor Godden ran to 3rd in the 1500m and the boys relay team came 2nd overall. A special mention to Jack Twyford for having a go and running for the team even though it was not his best event.

BTEC Group kick off term with a ‘Splash’

Surf lesson at Bourneouth PierThe BTEC year 12 group took their first steps towards being surfers on Monday 14th April when they took part in a surf lesson at Bournemouth Pier. They are surfing and rock climbing every Monday this term as part of their Practical Outdoor Activities unit. The lessons were arranged with Surf Steps Surf School, based a B’mouth Pier, which will soon be home to the new surfing reef planned for 2009

Surf lesson at Bourneouth PierKim Head and Jamie Winch (excuse the pun) were the standouts. The BTEC course is a great new way to learn in PE. The students had a great time and now need to research into healthy, safety and environmental factors associated with their new hobby!

North Dorset Netball Trials

On Wednesday 13th February, Miss George took the Year 7 and 8 teams to the Leweston North Dorset Netball Trials. We were up against some very steep competition in the form of the Independent schools and lost all our games, although the scores were all very close! We can be very pleased with that!

Learning Pathways THROUGH a Futures Curriculum

In September 2006 we launched an exciting new PE Key Stage 4 curriculum. The vision was to offer progression pathways for every individual learner offering different route ways through our subject. We designed Parents Packs which can be viewed by clicking on the relevant links on the KS4 page. Students had the choice of opting for GCSE PE or BTEC First Certificate in Sport. At the time we encouraged young people to think ahead and plan a course that would suit their future learning interests. We realised that not all young people learn the same way; some prefer more science based learning whilst others thrive on project based learning. We felt that the two courses on offer met our learners’ needs and allowed a healthy progression into post-16 learning.

As we approach the end of our 2006 cohort, I am pleased to announce superb results. The Year 11 BTEC group have achieved a 100% pass rate (A-C / Dist - Pass equiv) and recent GCSE mock predictions indicate an impressive 86% A-C score. If you add strong GCSE practical scores to this from our mock moderation it proves what a success this model is and how well our young people have done when they have shared responsibility of their learning. With Year 9 options imminent its worth clicking on our 2008 Pathways Model to view learning opportunities open to your child at Shaftesbury.

YEAR 8 RUGBY - EMERGING SCHOOLS FESTIVALS

A 16 strong squad made the trip to North Dorset RFC on Thursday 7th of February with every intention of going all the way. The festival was a real success with 39 schools based in Dorset turning up. We drew a tough first group and won, drew and lost our opening 3 games. In the afternoon rounds we did not do so well and tired hands and bodies gifted our opposition the ball. However, the lads had a great day out and all enjoyed the challenge and physical nature of the 12 man games, better luck next year.

Shaftesbury Climbers are best in Dorset

Shaftesbury Climbers are best in DorsetNick Baxter, Sam Crocker and Merrick Rayner won 1st / 2nd & 3rd place respectively in the annual 'Climbing Competition' at Bournemouth University. They had to battle it out against the best in the county to win the prizes. Nick also went on to win the 'dyno' challenge and came away with a wealth of prizes. Well done to all 16 students that entered from Shaftesbury, great to see you all there having a go!

Year 7 Boys Football Comp at Gillingham

This year we took over 2 teams to the annual Gillingham Football Comp 8-a-side. The games are played on astroturf and are very competitive. The first team did very well and reached the semi final after winning 1-0, drawing 0-0 and losing 1-0. They narrowly missed out on the final when eventual winners Blandford scored twice in the dying minutes.

The second team did not fair so well but gave it 100% nonetheless. This report is from Sam James - Year 7

As Shaftesbury got to Gillingham we looked very smart and looked liked pros, but when team 2 got on the pitch, it was a different story as we did not play so well! But, like everything there is always an excuse and ours is that we have not trained enough... team 1 played brilliantly though!

NEW 'Indo Boards' bring a cool sport to brighten up lunchtime

Indo Board

Julia Lane, the PDM for our area invested in a set of new indo boards, balance training boards on a mobile roller which test your balance and co-ordination. They are a new trend and feel like a combination of surfing, skating and snowboarding. Students can use the boards every lunchtime to improve their skills and hang ten! Sam Barnes and Eric Bryce are the resident pros leading lunchtime clubs

Indo BoardThe club runs every lunchtime and is open to all, just come along

Basketball and Rock Climbing are also on every lunchtime, just bring your trainers for an active lunch!

Cross Country - 28th November 2007

Cross Country

On Wednesday 28th Nov, Miss George boarded a coach with a handful of girls from Shaftesbury School. The girls were nervous as it was their first cross-country event and were even more worried about whether the rain would hold off or not! A mixture of year groups came for the event, which in total, consisted of a 1.5 mile cross country run across a beautiful landscape of woods and fields.

Julia Kunze, Frances Horn, Emily Burmeister, Bonnie Craddock, Jessica Gough, Sophie Alford, Robyn Norris, Lorraine Lo, Megan Booth and Abigail Masterson all came along to take part in this event.

On arrival, we noticed a huge grey cloud looming, however, the rain held off and the ladies all ran very well in their heat. It was a relay, so the girls ran in turn with 4 in a team. Overall, Shaftesbury School did not come in the top 3, however, being the only state school at the event, we feel we’ve done very well and plan to take a larger team of girls next year!

Year 11 Football Fixture vs Clayesmore
Tuesday 27th November 07

The boys put in a spirited performance to secure a 4-3 win over difficult opposition. Shaftesbury dominated the first half with plenty of changes but could not capitalise. It took a strong run and finish from Ryan Hall to motivate the boys.

The team came out in the second half inspired by two subs, Jamie Winch made an instant impact scoring two quality goals to establish a solid lead, and Eli Cooper looked comfortable in defence. The captain, Matt Marshall, dictated the play and created even more opportunities to score. However, fortunes turned for the opposition when they were awarded a penalty for a foul - they scored and the game was on!

At 3-1 we looked unsetted and Clayesmore crept back into the game. Josh Way was sent off for saving the ball on the line using his hand, the referee Jamie Laband made the decision and we were down to ten men! Two quick successive goals by Clayesmore set the game up for a dramatic end and it took a moment of magic from Jack Mitchell with a shot off his left foot flying into the top corner of the net to secure the win. It takes a big player to produce a moment like that.

All round, one of the most watchable games of the season and a credit to the spirit of the lads involved.

Netball 22nd November at Corfe Hills School, Poole

Year 10 A team: The girls played a good game, but failed to win the game. A lot of loose played balls with passes failing under pressure. With a strong attacking team, Shaftesbury had to work hard in defence to keep the goal count as low as possible. Finishing score: 29 : 4 to Corfe Hills

Yr 10 B team: With an extremely slippery court to play on, the B Team started off very positively. The attackers were strong when ball was in their possession & the defence worked hard to keep the ball out of the circle. Final score: 15:8 to Corfe Hills

Yr 11 team: extremely good play with two Year 9’s playing for them due to shortage of players. Corfe Hills were defending well keeping our attacking players out of the circle. Final score – 19:8

Overall, the commitment to Netball this term has been superb, and I have been extremely pleased with the response to the fixtures we’ve had planned and have played. Netball continues to move through into the New Year, with the main tournament starting again after Christmas. I hope to continue to see teams turning up to training on a Thursday night, (Years 10 & 11) and a Monday night, (Years 7, 8 & 9). Training helps develop individual and team tactics and strategies, so plays a very important part in the season.

See you in the New Year girls!
Miss George

Netball Results

Wednesday 7th November

Year 7 team – drew with Blandford 1 : 1

Year 8 team – won against Blandford 11 : 3

Thursday 8th November:

Year 10 A team – lost to Blandford 7 : 1
The Year 10 A team held Blandford out of the circle for the 1st quarter of the game. There was excellent attacking play and the new defenders were working well together for the first time after the moving around of players. Unfortunately, Blandford were able to penetrate the circle on more than one occasion, pressurising Shaftesbury’s defence to their maximum. Unlucky ladies, however, with more practice as a team, you’ll be getting those wins in no time.

Year 10 B team – drew with Blandford 3 : 3
This newly formed team are working extremely well together with very strong players across the whole court. Defenders are keeping the balls out of the shooting circle, allowing our strong attackers to move the ball up court and into their shooting circle quickly. An excellent game which was unfortunately called off due to a very heavy downpour!

Year 11 team – lost to Blandofrd 5 : 0

Monday 12th November:

Year 7 team – won against Sturminster 4 : 2

Year 8 team – won against Sturminster 18 : 4

Kick racism out of football week - 14th to 18th October 2007

Kick racism out

The Year 12 BTEC group ran a football festival to link in with the annual and national 'Kick Racism out of Football Week'

The group set up a rolling competition that ran every lunchtime in the sports hall and on the astroturf. They also set up a display in the PE area educating younger students about the national incentive and giving information on how to tackle racism in sport. Prior to the event they were involved in meetings as a team to ensure the events were a success.

All students in years 7 to 11 benefited and tutors ran activities in tutor time to link in with the practical lunchtime sessions. Everyone involved got a free badge and a keyring! The students were completing their BTEC Unit 5: Planning and Leading a Sports Event.

The team were: Kim Head, Jack Sitch, Jack Mitchell, Eli Cooper, Laura Craddock, Jamie Winch, Jamie Laband, Kian Moore and Todd Hart

Well done to Nathan Cobern for competing in the National Athletics at the weekend

He came 17th out of 25 100 metre runners. With a fastest time of 11.2 seconds, his 12.01 seconds meant he just missed out on a semi-final place by a fraction of a second – it’s tough at the top!

Well done, Nathan.

U15 Girls Dorset Rounders Tournament
Shaftesbury vs Parkstone

The Year 9 girls played a tremendous game and learned a lot about good team work in the fielding positions. The girls were one man down and really felt the strain when the Parkstone bowler continued to spin superb balls at them – time and time again. A smelly game well played (it was next to a sewage plant!). We unfortunately lost 20 rounders to 5.

Year 9 & 10 Boys Tennis – Shaftesbury Victory!!

Shaftesbury School hosted the North Dorset Year 9 and 10 boys tennis on Wednesday 27th June. The weather was very Wimbledon-esque with showers and sun in equal measure. Gillingham, the Gryphon and Blandford all brought competition in the form of doubles pairs.

The Year 9 boys played well and for most it was a first taster! Cameron Quinn, Jason Beal, Chris Roberts and Patrick Dewe played well, but Gillingham took the honours in the Year 9 Game.

The Year 10 competition was strong but Sasha Coombes and Luke Rutter managed to win overall with a total of 19 games, closely followed by Brandon James and Sam Rutter. The pairs managed good wins over county players – well done lads!

Future Olympic Star!

Massive congratulations go to Nathan Cobern of Year 9 for going one step further and qualifying for the National Finals in Birmingham next month. A great achievement that sees Nathan join the fastest boys in the country in the Under 15 category – watch this space for a 2012 appearance from Nathan – he’ll be the perfect age by then. Good luck from all at the school!!!

FA Charter Status

FA Charter Status

We are delighted to have been awarded the FA Charter Standard for Schools as part of the FA Football Development Programme.

The school has demonstrated that, under the guidance of a football qualified member of staff, the sport is part of the curriculum across all ages for both boys and girls and is offered as an extra-curricular activity with teams entered into the County Cup.

FA Charter Standard for Schools Jo Poore, Key Stage 4 PE Coordinator said: “FA Charter Status has recognised the hard work and commitment from both staff and students. It will help us push forward with the next phase in the development of football at Shaftesbury School and Sports College. We plan to hold an FA Level 1 coaching course in September for 25 sixth formers, who will then help coach and lead our school teams. Both boys and girls teams are in the County Cup next year, with the boys also entered in the English Schools FA National Cup”.

Working with the community is an important factor for this award, and the school has an official partnership with Shaftesbury Youth Football Club. U15 training takes place on a Friday after school on the Astroturf behind the school. New Year 9 and 10 players are always welcome.

Match Reports w/c 18th June

Year 7 & 8 Boys Tennis – Wednesday 20th June
Shaftesbury vs Gillingham
This match was a great success, with our boys only losing to two great County players.  An Excellent competition with particular stars rising to the occasion:  Jack Twyford, Antonios Mais and Alex Andrews.

Year 9 & 10 Rounders – Wednesday 20th June
Shaftesbury vs Blandford
The girls played a good game but unfortunately lost 9.5 – 5.5 rounders.

Family Athletics

On Tuesday 12th June Shaftesbury Sports College held its Family High Jump Trials.  Students from Shaftesbury Primary, The Abbey School and St Andrews Primary attended the event, which was pleasing to see.  All competitors did well, however we saw outstanding performances from Abigail Card and Sean Martin who both cleared 1.15m.

On Wednesday 13th June the Athletics trials for both Track and Field were held at Shaftesbury Sports College.  It was fantastic to see such enthusiastic teams of athletes from Motcombe, Shaftesbury and St Andrews Primaries and the Abbey School.  The event went smoothly allowing its competitors to show their abilities in Field and Track disciplines.

Despite the rain, the event saw many spectators supporting their schools, allowing the competitors to get the full affect of an athletics meet!

The top athletes from this event now go on to represent the Shaftesbury Family in the North Dorset Primary Athletics Meeting on Tuesday 26 June at Yeovil Athletics Arena.   More information is available from the primary schools that took part.

Well done to all competitors of the event and thank you to all of the Shaftesbury Sports College students that gave up their time to help ensure the meeting ran smoothly.

Year 9 Athletics – 7th June

We put out a strong year 9 team for the Bryanston Athletics Competition this year. A full boys and girls team made the trip over for the competition. Unfortunately the competition clashed with Work Experience meaning that the Year 10s were unable to compete. However, the boys dominated the 4 x 100m relay taking Gold and special congrats go to Cameron Quinn, Nathan Cobern and Kirsty Walters for winning their events convincingly.

Kings Park Athletics – 9th June

Well done to all the athletes who competed in selected events at the District Trials.  Special mention again goes to Nathan Cobern of Year 9 for qualifying for the South West trials in his event 100m sprints. Nathan clearly has great potential and may grace our tracks in London 2012!!!

RAD Rock Climbing

A group of students have begun a rock climbing course at local venues. The group are working on social interaction, confidence and developing personal skills in outward bound based environments. They had a great time at Dancing Ledge.   Watch out for pictures on the gallery page soon.  There’s more to come from this group as they dare to abseil next week!

They are; Kerry O’Mahony, Andrew Nobbs, Carla Williams, George Turner, Jordan Daly, Hayden Morris and Owen Devereux.

Chris Shore, Tim Bullen and Steffan Britton will be joining the group for future ventures this term!

Year 7 & 8 Gillingham Tennis Competition

A group of ten boys made the trip to Gillingham for the annual Tennis competition. For this group of lads it was their first competitive tennis experience. With Wimbledon on the horizon the group were inspired to play and learnt a lot from the experience.

The Year 7 boys, Adonis Mais, Joe Wahab, Ollie Russell and Elliott Bevis played four doubles games each and came up against Blandford, Gillingham and the County No 1 & 2 from the Gryphon School. They played really well and scored 8 and 9 points overall.

The Year 8 boys, Taylor Godden, Jack Twyford, Alex Andrews, Mark Emmett Bowden, Jason Phillips and Charlie Brennan competed well.  Jack and Taylor looked on target to win the whole Year 8 competition with convincing wins against Gillingham and Gryphon school. However, they stumbled at the last hurdle losing 6-3 which cost them the competition. Although the lads were disappointed to lose it was a great experience and has whet their appetite for more tennis in the future

Well done to all the above.

Match Reports

Y7&8 Rounders – 1st May 2007
Shaftesbury vs The Grange
The U13’s Rounders team unfortunately lost their first away game of the league to The Grange School in Christchurch. The journey was lengthy and the girls were tired before the game had started! With great determination and a superb team effort, the enthusiastic team played their best. It was the team’s first official game together and we are all confident that they have a winning collection of players who will win their next game!

6th Form Mixed Rounders – 1st May 2007
Shaftesbury vs The Grange
The 6th Form Mixed Rounders team lost 35½ to 16 to The Grange School. We caught the coach down with the U13’s and it was also the first time they had played together for a very long time. The team were relaxed and communicated with each other well – they are now looking forward to their next game - and a win!

Year 10 Cricket – 1st May 2007
Shaftesbury vs Blandford

Blandford 86 all out
Hall 3-3
Welch 3-13

Shaftesbury 87-3
Westcar 46
Sanger 12

Year 9 Cricket -2nd May 2007
Shaftesbury vs Gillingham
Shaftesbury lost by 8 wickets. A good performance against a very strong Gillingham side, but not scoring enough runs put us under pressure from the start. Good batting performances from Russell Canterbury and Andrew Morgan set us up well but we could not capitalise on their good start.

In the field Russell Canterbury and Jack Lander were the pick of the bowlers getting a wicket each thanks to good catches from Jacques Perree and Matt Craddock, but unfortunately the target we set Gillingham was just not high enough and they reached their target with wickets to spare.

A good game and a learning experience for many.

Year 7 Cricket – 3rd May 2007
Shaftesbury vs Sturminster
Shaftesbury Year 7 played Sturminster and expected to win! Shaftesbury got changed and were on the minibus by 1.45pm. After practice, Lewis Mutton won the toss and chose to bat. He got 53 (retired) and Michael Cuff 22 altogether with various other batsmen. Shaftesbury got 126 for 2. Sturminster Newton came in and the first wicket fell when their player was on 46. In the end Sturminster won by 4 overs.

March 2007

Shaftesbury School Climbing Club ‘Reaching New Heights’ Sponsored ‘3 Peaks Climbing Challenge’
Thursday 29th March 2007

FA Charter Standard for Schools

A team of 18 students and 2 teachers set out to climb the equivalent height of the 3 Peaks combined. This is a stiff challenge if you do the maths! The combined height of Scafel Pike 935m, Mt Snowdon 1085m and Ben Nevis 1344m works out at a staggering 3364m (11,188ft) collectively. The team had to climb a 6metre wall a minimum of 32 times each to achieve their goal in less than 3 hours.

We left school and headed to the Bournemouth University climbing wall, our venue for the afternoon. After a quick briefing and a warm up the group were off climbing on ropes in pairs across 8 lines on the wall. The wall varies in angles with easy slabs, delicate arêtes and butch overhangs. The wall made a great impression on the students and motivation levels were high. Students worked in small groups and pairs and climbed five times each whilst ticking down the overall tally of 520+ ascents that needed to be done by 4pm

FA Charter Standard for Schools One hour in, the group were moving slowly and things looked bleak for the 3-hour time window. However, we had reached the halfway mark in style as limbs began to tire. Some of the older climbers did some quick soloing on the smaller wall to add some mileage and cover the ground quicker. Great efforts by Nick Baxter and Kian Moore helped reduce the workload for some of the younger students. As 3pm approached the team were tiring but seemed to find a second wind to finish the whole challenge with 10 minutes to go. The mood was high in the camp on completion of the challenge and the students were proud of their achievement.

The event was organised to raise funds to purchase new climbing ropes, harnesses and hardwear that will allow the transition to outdoor climbing to happen for these young people in the future. Big thanks go to George Carter’s family business, Shire Thatchers, for providing the excellent team t-shirts (see the photos) and for providing four new helmets for this summers outdoor ventures. Also, a big thanks to Andy Boland at Dept of Sport and Recreation at the wall for lending us the facility for the time it took to complete the challenge. Finally, well done to all the students involved. It’s a great achievement (certificates to follow!) and early indications hint that we have raised in excess of £700 for the cause, great work!

Year 10 Boys Football – 26th March 2007
Shaftesbury vs Sturminster

Shaftesbury got off to a bright start, producing the first save of the day from Sturminster within five minutes. Throughout the first half Shaftesbury created a number of clear cut chances to take the lead, the woodwork saving Sturminster on three occasions and Shaftesbury’s lack of composure in front of goal a couple of times. Against the run of play Stur managed to open the scoring, going in 1-0 at half time.

The second half saw Shaftesbury carrying on in an attacking vein, and ten minutes in Blake Westcar levelled the score with a close-range finish. Soon afterwards, Blake latched on to a through ball to slot home his second goal putting Shaftesbury 2-1 up. Stur went on the attack and with ten minutes remaining they scored the equalizer. Shaftesbury never gave up and with three minutes to go Matt Marshall scored the winning goal from close range, leaving the final score at 3-2 to Shaftesbury.

Year 7/8 Rugby – 23rd March 2007
Shaftesbury vs Gillingham

In the inaugural President’s Cup Match, Shaftesbury produced an excellent performance at North Dorset Rugby Club against fierce rivals Gillingham School. Gillingham took an early lead through a converted try, however things got better for Shaftesbury when Jason Beal bulldozed his way over the line to make the scores 7-5 at half time, Shaftesbury School’s answer to Jonny Wilkinson, Andy Turner stepped up and knocked over a difficult conversion to make the half time score 7-7.

With Shaftesbury turning round and having the wind at their backs, they were quickly on the front foot with some excellent forward play by Joe Wahab and Kleos Michael. However, Gillingham scored an excellent try against the run of play, missing the conversion, leaving the scores at 12-7 with just over 10 minutes to play. However, to cap a man of the match performance Jason Beal grabbed another try to make the score 12-12. Both teams played some excellent rugby in the final 10 minutes, however neither side was able to add to the scores. It was a fantastic game of rugby and it was fantastic to see so many parents at the game. An excellent performance. Well Done.

This was a great team performance, seeing Shaftesbury coming back from one-nil at half time with Blake Westcar managing to latch onto a through pass to score the equaliser. Shaftesbury had the better chances, with the woodwork denying them a couple of times. Callum Bent made a string of fine saves, to keep the score level. The Outdoors Show 2007
By Frances Bathurst S1

On 16th of March (Red Nose Day), myself and 29 other students went to the annual Outdoors Show at the Birmingham NEC.

We got on the coach at 7.10am and arrived in Birmingham shortly after 10am. The coach was really cool and had a TV on board so we watched rock climbing and surfing DVD’s and a film - Johnny English.

When we first entered the show we walked around in groups collecting freebies and gaining insight into possible careers and jobs in the outdoor industry. Some people collected stress cows, posters, books and sweets!

Then we all met up for lunch and heard an inspirational speech from Leo Houlding, a famous UK climber. Leo spoke about his climbing trips, experiences and his career to date. He showed us some pictures and video clips of him free climbing and slack lining in Yosemite Valley in California, USA.

Leo Houlding Free Climbing the Nose in Yosemite Valley After lunch we all split up and went shopping. Inspired, some of us ventured out into the ‘Have a Go Zones’ which included rock climbing, para gliding, mountain biking, rope-a-phobia, caving and much more. There were hundreds of stalls full of reduced items and bargains.

Finally, we all met up at around 3pm and went home. It was a fantastic day and I loved every minute of it. I hope to go again next year as the show will run on FRIDAY 16TH OF MARCH 2008. See you there!

Year 7 Football
Shaftesbury vs Gillingham – Monday 5th March

In wet and windy conditions Shaftesbury played Gillingham. The first half was dominated by Gillingham who were playing down hill and with the wind. As a result they went in at half time with a comfortable 6 goal lead, but Shaftesbury didn’t give up and they pulled one back in the second half. Shaftesbury really deserved more goals in the second half as in this half they were the better team. Throughout the match there was friendly banter between the two schools and both teams had good battles on the pitch. The match ended with a 6-1 win to Gillingham.

Dorset Schools Cross Country Championships
Saturday 3rd February

Kingston Maurwood, near Dorchester, was the host of this years Dorset Schools County Championships and proved to be a perfect, but tough, venue. Again, the weather conditions were perfect with it being a sunny but cool day. Shaftesbury School was represented by Joel Armorgie, Patrick Dewe, Matthew Marshall and Sasha Coombes, with the other pupils who were selected unable to compete due to other commitments. First to run were Joel & Patrick in the Junior Boys category having to complete a 3800m course. Unfortunately Patrick twisted an ankle on a tricky part of the course but Joel went on to overtake a number of runners and complete a fine effort.

Next up were Matthew and Sasha in the Inter Boys category having to complete a very demanding, hilly and energy sapping 4550m! Due to a knee problem, Matthew had to withdraw part way through the race but proceeded to cheer on Sasha who put in a very good performance once again.

Well done boys!
