Student Care
The care of students is crucial to success. If they are happy, motivated and have a sense of belonging then they will develop and succeed. To this end, the Tutor’s role is highly significant. The Tutor sees that students settle well into their new school and is available to offer guidance and counselling through mentoring.
On entering the school, all students are placed in one of four Houses: Owens, Sanderson, Thompson or Redgrave. Within the house, they are then placed in a tutor group comprising students from years 7 to 11. The tutor leads the tutorial programme, which covers Personal, Social, Health and Work-Related Learning.
Tutors are pleased to discuss issues with parents - indeed communication between parents and school is an important element of student care. If necessary, tutors will refer to senior staff as appropriate. Heads of House oversee the work of the Tutors and are responsible for the well-being of the House as a whole. The Head of House will be your first point of contact with the school in matters requiring serious or urgent attention.
There are several options available to help support students - from peer mentoring, to counsellors and a range of agencies co-ordinated through school. We encourage all our students to be self-disciplined, to have a respect for all people and their property and to develop a sense of corporate responsibility for working together in harmony. We urge any students who may be in any sort of difficulty, or who may be having trouble coping with work or social relations, to talk things through with their tutor, or indeed with any member of staff.
Our first priority is your child's welfare and we will usually discuss any concerns we might have about your child with you. There might be occasions, however, when we have to provide information to or consult other agencies such as Children's Services Social Care before we contact you. Our responsibility to do so is determined by Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole Inter-Agency Child Protection Procedures, 2006. If you want to know more about these procedures, please speak to the Headteacher.
